What It Is

The dragon pole, or Luk Dim Boon Kwan (the six-and-a-half point pole), is Wing Chun's long-weapon form. It is built on a small set of core movements, traditionally counted as six and a half, practised with a long, heavy pole from a low, strong stance. The form develops whole-body power, stance strength, grip and focus, and those qualities carry back into empty-hand Wing Chun.

Few Movements, Deep Training

Where the empty-hand forms contain many techniques, the pole form contains very few. That is the point. With so little to remember, all of your attention goes into how each movement is done: the stance, the line of the pole, and the release of power through the whole body.

What It Builds

Stance strength, because the form is practised low and rooted. Grip and forearm strength, because a long pole magnifies every wobble at the tip. And power generation, because moving the pole quickly and accurately requires the legs, waist and arms to work as one unit.

How to Practise It

Start with a lighter pole and a comfortable stance height. Focus on accurate lines and a stable tip before adding speed or power. Short, regular sessions build strength safely; overtraining with a heavy pole early on strains the wrists and shoulders.

Common Mistakes

Using the arms alone instead of the whole body. Standing too high, which removes the stance training the form is designed for. And practising in a space that's too small, which teaches you to shorten movements that should be full.

Can you learn the dragon pole online?

Yes. The dragon pole is taught step by step in Kung Fu Kendra’s Wing Chun Online Certification Course, a 10-level program taught by 3rd generation Ip Man lineage master Sifu Kendra Mahon (Grandmaster William Cheung, 1st generation; Master Brian Lewadny, 2nd generation). Every level has a graded exam, students get direct feedback, and it is a single one-time fee with no monthly payments.

Kendra’s Verdict

The dragon pole is the quiet power builder of Wing Chun. Train it patiently and your empty-hand stance and power will thank you.
